Nigeria country report

Nigeria has 150 million inhabitants of which 3 million are deaf and hard of hearing. There are over 250 dialects in Nigeria.

There is no disability law in Nigeria and no sign language interpreter training.

The deaf community is willing to work together with the interpreting community. The deaf community is active for over 30 years. Since 2007 we have an interpreter association (ASLIN), with the help of the WASLI guidelines.

Christine Roschaert, a deafblind person and trainer from Canada, came to Nigeria to help train 15 interpreters. We also have a plan for the coming years and we are trying to conduct some research as well.
