Chile country report

Fifteen years ago there were not really sign languge interpreters but more helpers. Now the situation is changed.

We have 43 members and there is no higher education for sign language interpreters, but there are courses in sign languages. So persons learn sign language from there or from deaf persons directly.

There are two national deaf associations and one interpreter association. It has been a struggle for 10 years, but following the earthquake in Chile the deaf association agreed to change something. So we decided to establish a federation of the deaf combining the associations (www.achiels.cl)..
